Merlin Entertainments

Merlin Entertainments is a global entertainment giant that operates many of the UK’s landmark theme parks and visitor attractions – including Madame Tussauds, Legoland Windsor Resort, Thorpe Park and Alton Towers. The company has turned to our team several times to deliver bespoke LED solutions that enhance the atmosphere of its distinctive rides and entertainment venues.

Scanlite’s team used over 3 million LEDs to create a bespoke ‘eye’ for the iconic Nemesis Reborn rollercoaster

The Challenge

Merlin Entertainments had several clear objectives for the LED displays in its venues – crucially, they needed to support the theme and ‘story’ of each attraction. In doing so, they would also help to engage and entertain prospective riders while they queued, keeping their energy and excitement high, and further enhancing the overall experience.

At Scanlite, our brief was mainly focused on two key attractions at its Alton Towers Resort: the “Toxicator”, a high-intensity top-spin ride with a strong dystopian theme, and “Nemesis Reborn” – the latest iteration of a rollercoaster that’s been thrilling visitors since its first debut all the way back in 1994.

The Solution

Toxicator: We designed and manufactured two huge LED cylinders for Toxicator. These curved LED structures are distinguished by their immersive, liquid-like visual effects, giving it the ride a fun visual spark, and cementing its sense of place in the Forbidden Valley – a place of “otherworldly aliens, suspicious scientific experiments and military might”.

As with many other projects we’ve completed on this scale, the technical requirements of the LED cylinders were very strict, so at Scanlite we drew on our extensive wealth of technical expertise (over 40 years’ worth) to produce a display that would meet these requirements to the last detail. That involved keeping to the strict timeline scheduled for the ride’s construction, and working within its designated safety restrictions, ensuring that we were able to produce a solution that comfortably met the project’s technical requirements, and our own exceptionally high standards.

The Result

Both installations have been successful in creating a massive buzz for Alton Towers, both inside and outside the park. They’re consistently popular with attendees, regularly drawing large crowds, and the Nemesis Eye in particular frequently appears in official promotional material from the park, as well as customer-generated social media content. The sheer scale of the Toxicator has also made it a hit with riders, who’ve also taken note of its variety of creative animations – for example, when the ride is under maintenance, riders may be able to spot the moving image of a man “cleaning” the cylinders, apparently from the inside. We’re hugely proud of its success here at Scanlite, and it stands as a testament to our commitment to constantly push the bar forward with this technology, and raise standards of what it can achieve.
