A unique challenge to design and install, the Terminal 5 digital advertising displays are a towering presence at Heathrow.
The Challenge
As most contractors know, working in airport terminals are always complex projects involving strict operational hours, significant security restrictions and other instructions to minimise the impact on passengers. But this is Terminal 5 at Heathrow. With up to 10 million passengers travelling through the terminal in a single year, the prospect of installing seven giant displays both landside and airside becomes a much more staggering ask. Thankfully, Scanlite has years of experience in working with the aviation industry, having multiple installations across different airports around the UK – so we were more than up to the challenge.
The Solution
Our dedicated technical team worked with other partners on the project to build The Towers @ T5 with minimal disruption to Heathrow’s passengers. We worked within strict operational hours agreed with Heathrow, lessening the impact on the busiest terminal in the airport. A key focus was on flexibility with content, allowing all seven displays to be synchronised to play the same media to prevent a visual lag time. In contrast, preparations were made to also ensure individual content could be played on each screen, increasing the value to potential advertisers on what was already a cutting-edge DOOH opportunity.
The first brand campaign to go live on the Towers after installation was from industry leaders Microsoft. Huge brands took immediate advantage of these state-of-the-art display screens in front of the eyes of the world.
