The Energy Efficiency of LED within our Digital Signage

Did you know that LEDs and incandescent don’t produce light in the same way?

This may be obvious to some people but LEDs are far more energy efficient. Let us explain why! Incandescent lighting,  which derives from ‘to glow white’ in Latin; wastes a lot of electricity by just heating up, making them very inefficient producers of light.

LED’s produce diode light which is far much efficient than incandescent, which uses much more energy when being powered. If you prefer figures, it may be nice to know that LED bulbs use more than 75% less energy than your standard incandescent light bulb.

Even the brightest of LEDs tend to use only 11 or 12 watts to create a similar light output to the 50 watt incandescent bulb. LEDs produce light by using electroluminescence, which is an optical and electrical phenomenon that emits light in response to the passage of an electric current or to a strong electric field. Electroluminescence creates a small amount of heat instead of semiconductors generating their light.

LED is simply far more efficient at turning electricity into light, you’ll notice that they don’t require the glass bulb around them either.

Safety is always a consideration as well, the fact that LEDs don’t waste energy by creating excess heat is a huge plus. They also have a much longer lifetime, meaning that they are more cost effective. It’s much harder to find a lightbulb that isn’t LED now, you could certainly say they are a go-to product for the Digital Signage and Lighting industries.

LEDs are constantly evolving and improving, we are always excited to work with them and see what we can create next. They produce warmer tones and the light that’s emitted can now be broader.

When researching which signage you might like to purchase, it’s worth asking about the lumen (measurement of light) within the said display. Lightbulb packaging usually has it’s lumen level listed on it, find the lumen output you’d like and compare LED, LCL and incandescent. For low wattage and lumen, LED should win every time.

If you were to continuously use an LED it should last around 100,000 hours or 10 years.
